SPG Lawyers are delighted to announce that from 1 January 2023, Maria Stafurik and Jeffrey (Hao) Su will be promoted to the position of Partner. The promotion of both Maria and Jeffrey is part of SPG’s ongoing strategic restructuring. Both lawyers bring significant experience and enthusiasm, which will serve the practice well for many years to come.

Maria commenced working at SPG in July 2007, shortly after graduating from Griffith University with a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of International Business with Honours. She immediately commenced working in SPG’s Pharmacy Legal Work Group. Since that time Maria has excelled in providing first class legal services to the pharmaceutical industry, and has been retained and continues to work for large Australian pharmacy groups. She has extensive transactional and legal support experience in:

• sales and purchases of pharmacies;
• establishing new approvals with the Federal Department of Health and State based regulators;
• the relocation of pharmacy outlets.

Since 2019, Maria has been a member of the Queensland Health Select Committee, to advise the State Government on amendments to the Pharmacy Business Ownership Act 2001. In this capacity, she has been the sole industry based legal adviser to the Government, and has assisted in the preparation of a draft Bill that is now with stakeholders for feedback.

Maria has also consulted with the Federal Government Department of Health to advise in respect of the creation of an online portal for pharmacy approvals, sales, transfers and other related activities. This portal was successfully rolled out in 2019/2020.

She is also an honorary board member of a large national pharmacy retail group, and in this capacity, regularly advises on legal issues concerning governance, regulatory compliance and dispute resolution.

Jeffrey was born in China, and then moved to Singapore to complete his primary education.
In 2002, he moved to Australia to undertake and complete his secondary education.

He is fluent in Mandarin and English. In 2012, Jeffrey received his Bachelor of Laws from Bond University, and in 2014 commenced working in the SPG Commercial Law Group.

Since that time, Jeffrey has developed a broad range of experience and skills including in respect of:

  • sale, purchase and assignment of management rights;
  • business sales and purchases;
  • rural property acquisitions up to a value of $50 million;
  • shopping centre acquisitions and leases;
  • advising private individuals, multi-national corporations and private equity funders in respect of loans, mortgages and securities.

He has a very close connection to the local Chinese community, and is a member of a number of associations, including:

  • League of Entrepreneurship Qld;
  • Australian Chinese Young Entrepreneurs Association; and
  • Gold Coast Chinese Association.

Whilst Jeffrey’s connections with the Gold Coast Chinese community are well established, he also has developed significant links with the Chinese business community in Brisbane. He will shortly open a visited office in Brisbane for SPG Lawyers. Jeffrey will practice from both our Gold Coast office and the Brisbane visited office. The establishment of the Brisbane office will provide greater access for our Brisbane based Chinese clients, and business contacts.

With Maria and Jeffrey joining the leadership group, we believe that their skills, experience and fresh ideas will reinforce and enhance the redoubtable foundations of SPG Lawyers.
